I had my first tandem when I was about 18 because my girl friend (now my wife) could not keep up with the rest of our mates when out riding. Not really surprising as I had a light weight racing bike while hers was as heavy as a cast iron gate with wheels on.
She really didn't do much pedalling then but when it's your girlfriend it didn't really matter (love conquers all).
However now she's 76 and I'm 78 I'm looking for a better performance or I'll get another stoker. :D :D :D
Looking forward to some good weather so we can get some mileage in.

Oh, the classic syndrome - you often see the male (it's always a male) cycling enthusiast, with all the gear (lycra and carbon), and his SO, on a much cheaper, lesser bike (because she's not an enthusiast).

Surprisingly enough, she often has trouble keeping up, and generally doesn't enjoy the experience.

BugBear (two tandems, a trike and a bike)

I just realised you live in a region of the country that has no word for 'flat', so kudos to you for even wanting to cycle around up there. :-D

Why is there never any mudguards fitted to pedal cycles these days.

I predict the rear peddler is going to have a very wet bum if you are caught out in the rain.

Take care and enjoy the open air.

I tip my hat to you Sir, - I can only hope that at that age me and the missus can ride a tandem!

these are quite good fun!

When the tandem arrived the weather was atrocious ,blowing a gale and throwing it down with rain so after putting it together it went in the garage. as ChrisR said there were no mudguards so I had to fit these.
Then we had a bright day and that was when the fun started. As I said we hadn't rode a tandem since our 20s. first problem was I couldn't get my leg over   (the cross bar I mean :D :D ). When I ride my solo bike it's one foot on the pedal, scoot and cock my leg over. You can't do this with a tandem as you both need to be aboard to start.
As naznomad say Wales isn't known for being Flat but from our house in the village to the beach we have about a couple of miles that are flat and this is as far as we are going daily weather permitting.
Hopefully when the summer comes we will the try something more adventuress. We only bought it to try and keep fit while having fun

If you ever make it down as far as Aberystwyth, the kettle's on. :-D

Mrs Dickm quite pleased with just achieving 10k miles on Scottish hills over 9 years. But she's only 74!
So have bought her a new chain and rear block to celebrate.
