Here is my first effort at cross grain, thanks to Neil for getting them for us.
Not too sure about the finish. I micromesh to 12,000 then blo/ca. I then give a final polish with ubeaut GLOW.
Seems to be a bit dull, is that the cross grain soaking everything in??

Tam, I have tried to use your instructions but it has not worked for me. Any ideas?
Barry.

Hi Barry, what instructions where they? Senility setting in, need a memory jog.

Hi Tam,

The "sticky" at the top of the forum page.

I clicked the box under the image to highlight/left clicked then "copied"/then pasted in ukworkshop message.

I have tried just pasting....img....img.....and also url....url
None of them seem to bring up the image.

Barry.

Hi Paul,
PB meaning photobucket?????
I have!
That is where my image is sitting waiting to come to you all.
Barry.

Is there any reason why "drag and drop" cannot be used on here?
That would perhaps help us 70 year old wrinklies!

OK Barry.
Click on the little box under you piccy, when you sign in,than right click.Left Click on copy.
Than come to your post on here.Right click in the posting box,and left click paste. You should have the link in the post box.
Click on preview underneath the box to see if the image is their.
There is some of the link you need to remove which is on the how to.This stops all of PBs bumph from showing.

Paul,
I have done just as you said as per the instructions I refered to as being "Tam's"
I did click preview and only the code shows.
Do I need any other settings on my PC?
Barry.

Hi Barry, just finished sending you a PM about photo posting, what did you do to get the photo up? Would be grateful if you let me know in case I need to edit the tutorial.

I am not unhappy with the results but I HAVE had better results on "normal" grain direction.

I like the blo/ca finish and with the GLOW polish on top they come up quite well.

I am still wondering if it is the end grain pulling all the finish in and causing it to go "dull" Having said that I did give it 3 coats of sanding sealer so it should have been stable enough.

I DO like the grain patterns doing them this way and it was very interesting watching the patterns coming out as they were turned. A very good new project.

Barry.

Hi Barry.

Quite an unusual effect with the grain lying that way, think you have to be careful on what timbers you cut that way to get the unusual effect though. Nice effect on your one.

I think if you are looking at getting a high gloss finish as you would get on long grain, I think you may be looking at double the coats of finish to enable you to cut back on a buffing wheel. Also the initial finish on the wood must be impeccable, side grain is notorious for the slightest bit of torn grain showing up in the finish.

I think anyone using side grain blanks are going to have to get a lot of practice in with razor sharp skews, can't imagine any other way of finishing these pens.

Hi Tam,

I have got another blank tubed up ready for another go tomorrow. Will put picture up if all goes well.

Just changed my lathe today so things going a little slow till I get used to it.

Barry,

I sent a link to your picture to the guy in the US that the blanks came from, and I quote from his email....

MY WOOD LOOKS GREAT, IT CAME OUT CLEAR AS A BELL. TELL YOUR TURNER JOB WELL DONE.

(his capitals, not mine!)

Cheers,

Neil.

Very nice. I didn't realise it'd come out like that. What other species did you guys get?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for that. Pleased to hear the supplier is satisfied with the results.

I have done another one. It looks on the image as though there is a sanding line round it but it is in the grain. Only goes half way round.

Barry.

P.S. The finish is very much better on this one and I did it the same way as the first. Must have been the charactaristics of the wood???
