They are fixed to batons secured to the wall.
The weight of the granite holds the island in place.


Ahh, I thought that the island would have been fixed somehow.

I'm planning an island with a sink and dishwasher so they'll be water and waste pipes along with electrics. Is it still the granite that stops movement in this case?

No reason that you an't angle bracket it down to the floor, just depends how wobbly you think it will be.
