Hi,
I am hoping someone can advise??
I have just glued an oak veneer to a plywood substrate using a fast drying PVA.
I have done this many times, using the same adhesive on marquetry projects with no problems, but on this occasion, approximately a dozen mould spots seem to have manifested.
I was wondering if there is any way that I could disguise or remove the offending spots, as I dont really want to remove the veneer and start again?

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Simon

White vinegar is sometimes used to remove mould during antique restorations as it's less damaging than bleach.

Thanks very much custard, I will give it a go.
Would the best method of application be to dab it on the individual spots or to wipe the entire surface?

Thanks again
Simon

Wipe all over then remove. By the way, are you sure it's mould and not fragments of iron from your bench or hands, reacting with the tannin in the Oak veneer and turning black? If it is you'll have to go the Oxalic Acid route, again use all over but be aware it'll fade marquetry colour so will require some corrective staining.

Thanks for the replies.
I am pretty sure it is mould, so will have a go with the vinegar first.
If that fails, I will source some oxalic acid.

I will let you know the result when I have hopefully rectified it.

Thanks again
Simon

Regular 5% white vinegar is fine, you don't need the concentrated stuff. When I say treat the whole piece I mean the whole section of Oak within the marquetry.

Good luck!
