Hi,

I'm about to embark on a set of fitted wardrobes, the doors of which will each be around 1.8m x 50cm in 19mm veneered mdf with a faux shaker face frame in hardwood (thanks to whoever suggested the idea way back on here somewhere) and attached via 3 kitchen cupboard type hinges. I'm now thinking of putting a full length mirror on the inside of some of the doors but I'm wondering whether I'll need to beef up the hinges somewhat, if so any idea a) how many hinges I'll need to go up to or how i can calculate this and does anyone have any good ideas on the best way of mounting the mirrors?

Thanks,

Pat.

Stick the mirror on with mirror adhesive

Door will weigh about 6kg and 4mm glass 7kg assuming its a bit narrower to clear the hinges so blum's table would suggest 4 hinges on the door.

In my very limited experience, mirror adhesive works very well.

I've got three MDF cupboard doors in the house fronted by 4mm mirrors. They're all in bathrooms and get banged shut quite a bit. I was worried about the weight, and routed out rectangles behind the mirrors, so the doors are only slightly heavier than plain MDF (if at all). The mirrors sit fine on a 'frame' of MDF, about 3" wide round the edges with similar width 'rails' across the middle.

I got the glass cut and stuck down by one of our local glaziers who's a mirror specialist, and it hasn't budged in six-or-so years (for the oldest ones). The mirror glue needs to be applied to a sealed surface. One set of doors had a laminate finish. The third was 'painted' with PVA, on their recommendation.

I'd guess if you're making panel doors, that would be even better for weight/protection, but I'd still get the mirror professionally fitted. That way, if it does go wrong later, you should have some comeback .
