Sorry I couldn't resist, it was a cheap shot. The maypole in a nearby village is basically a pole with a round tenon on top. The ribbons are draped over the top of the tenon and held with a drawing pin. A wooden or metal finial is pushed over the top which would be a friction fit. The issue is usually anchoring the pole firmly in the ground, but this shouldn't be difficult. Dig the hole deep enough, allow 6" all round and fill with crushed stone or similar.
