I sent Makita UK the two Square drive bits I bought last year as they were unsuitable for the purpose. I also included some Square drive screws to prove the point. No reply. I guess they didn't like me saying they shouldn't sell drive bits until they could get the size right...

I attempted some correspondence with them several years ago re a half sheet sander. The bag fitted into an "L" shaped slot, so that if you ran the sander up a door lining or used it in an odd position, the moment you touched the bag sideways it blew off like a flour bomb. All it needed was the slot to be "J" shaped - it was bad design. I've still got the sander with the bag gaffer taped to it. Three letters and no reply. I vowed never again to buy Makita.

I've only got one, a 18 volt drill - white one if that makes a difference. It's been absolutely brilliant and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Just not happy about the UK office. Oh and the bits that don't fit ... :?

Never had any trouble with my Makita kit.
Nor me. Still have some old 18v NiCd stuff which still works good as new and, not professionally but as a busy amateur's only kit, it's had a quite hard life.

Annoying that their new upgraded 18volt Li batteries won't fit the old range of 18volt Li tools even though the batteries look the same

And they wouldn't have done that deliberately, of course, would they? :)

My local rep already suggested replacing the 10 tools I have with the more modern ones that accept the new batteries

Had only one li-ion battery failure since 2006, a 2007 battery. Only one warranty claim in that time for a chuck that didn't lock properly. Never had an issue with Makita UK in Milton Keynes.

I thought they did fit and you just had to make sure you didn't run the batteries too low ?

I had been told that but the one I tried wouldn't fit :(

Why wouldn't you run them (too) low? And with an Li battery, how would you know anyway? They go from OK to dead in a nanosecond.
Apparently the old tools drain the new batteries too quickly & damage them, new tools are designed differently to avoid this. The suggestion I was told if I wanted to use the new batteries is as Coley stated, run the tool but recharge the battery little & often & don't allow it to full discharge.
Obviously this does not apply to new tools but was academic for me as the new battery wouldn't fit my old tools.

Incidentally, my issue was with their customer service, not so much the tool.

Think that's true for a fair few owners Phil, it would have to be a very good grinder to replace my Makita cordless but my experience of their customer service was very very disappointing

Usually you can hear when the batteries are starting to lose their power- the only exception is the radio which I make sure to change at the start of each day regardless of whether it needs it ;)

I've had several makita items and not had any problems, or need to contact the makers.
Regards Rodders

Me too, if Festool don't make a tool that I want (at a sensible price) then Makita is my first alternative.

My makita carousel is overflowing !!!! Newest addition is the multitool which is as good if not better than the corded fein. Must add I've not seen any real difference in performance from makita genuine 3ah batteries and eBay offering of 2 3ah batteries for 45quid ish- they came with a 3 year warranty so it was worth a punt !
