I'm trying to cut down the spanner count around the lathe and want to make a multi-purpose spanner for a 3" Jet faceplate as supplied with their bigger lathes, and a Sorby Patriot M33 excert (conventional open ended spanner shapes), plus a Patriot direct thread chuck (a C-spanner to suit the hex sockets for operating the jaws).

Unfortunately I don't have the first two items to hand so can anyone give me the across-flats measurements for the Jet faceplate and the Sorby excert?
The width of the excert slot would also be handy, so that I don't use metal stock that is too thick.

Thanks in advance

Duncan

The insert spanner is 47mm the slot is 10mm wide so plenty of room, my faceplate (Jet 1642) is more like 5" and has no spanner flats, just a couple of grub screws, I have turned very large pieces on it with no problem at all getting it to release.

Thanks Kim, that's the Sorby sorted.

Funnily enough my 3520B has only a 3" faceplate - with flats, grubscrews and an amazing cast spanner that looks like something out of an old Victorian pumping station.

If anyone has the 3" faceplate dimensions, I'd be ready to start cutting steel.

I got to admit Duncan, you have me puzzled here, if you have the faceplate, why do you need the measurements from elsewhere?

I can't picture the situation that prevent you from measuring your own? I am obviously missing something and curiosity has got the better of me. :D

Hi Kim

Yes, you are missing something - but it's not obvious!

I have good metalworking facilities at work - but my work is presently in the South Atlantic, and that is a long way from my workshop in Northampton! More info at: gm0hcq.com/jcr_update. It is not my blog; I prefer to stay out of the limelight, but it has some interesting stuff on it.

Happy surfing

Ah, all is explained, thanks for satisfying my curiosity. :)

Very interesting read on the page, not something I would care for, though I imagine the wildlife views must be pretty interesting at times.

Lots of wildlife, sometimes pretty vicious - there are no veggies down here, except for a few on the ship.
Unfortunately, I can't post pictures as our internet is unbelievably slow - and there wouldn't be any wood in them!
