Kumiko

As I primarily make boxes and small pieces of furniture, I will often look at Instagram & Pinterest for ideas, tips and motivation.
A couple of the posters on Instagram, Mike Pekovich & Kenny Matt (of 52 boxes in 52 weeks) occasionally use kumiko panels in their boxes & small cabinets and I'm tempted to to have a try myself.

Does anyone here do kumiko or have any information, sources etc as to how to start please?
I know there are YouTube videos on the topic but rather than plough through loads of videos I thought there may be someone on the Forum who could point me in the right direction to start with.
I have all the necessary tools (although it could be a good excuse to buy a kanna) and should be able to make any jigs so it is really about how to start, tips, thoughts on how difficult / time consuming it might be etc.

Hello,

Essentially they are just half lapped lattices of thin dimension timber. I have made a few shoji myself. The asanoha or hemp leaf design that I think you are referring to, that Pekovitch uses, is a design for Japanese transom and sometimes lighting fixtures. Try to find Toshio Odate's book on making shoji, for some detail. Pekovitch doesn't do them quite the same as Odate, though it is only minor, Odate doesn't cut the individual parts right through, but leaves a thin wooden hinge, so the thing holds together. You'll see if you get the book what I mean. I like Shoji a lot and am planning to do a few more for my bedroom. I might incorporate the Asanoha pattern, now you have brought it up.
