Less than half the tin is actually 'product'. Why not be honest and upfront and put it in a smaller tin ?

...put it in a smaller tin ?

And your long term supply agreement for the current tin should just be forgotten?

And the machinery/filling line that processes the tins, spludges the stuff in and installs the lid should just be scrapped?

Far easier to turn down the volume knob on the dispenser and change a number on the machine that paints the weight on the outside.

Provided that the machine then prints 'Rip Off Inside'.

It seems inevitable, but at least they can't mess with the contents. Loads of stuff has been 'cheapened' by changing ingredients. More palm oil, less olive oil; less fruit in the jam, less marm in the marmalade, stuff like that.

A packet of McVities digestive biscuits, my go-to workshop refreshment, has gone from 400g to 380 and now 360g. Back in the day they were 1lb, 454g. They are consumed with a cup of instant coffee, don't want to stop to make the real stuff mid morning, Nescafe Azerra has gone from 100g to 90 and in some cases 80g. Same tins though.

Where size and quantity are specified, e.g. a box of 200 4.0x25 screws, the price has gone up by lots, I was shocked - shocked, I tell you, shocked - by the price of the last box of Reisser screws I bought.

Carrefour supermarkets in France have started putting shelf labels with products where the supplier has cut the weight or volume, that way the customer can make an informed choice.

Have you weighed the tin, does it actually have within it what is specified? Could be an error fill.

It's to accommodate the rest of the tin, not shown in your pic. Also to allow for the expansion during temperature changes in storage not blowing the two parts apart.
Are you trying to tell us that expansion is going to double the size of the stuff ? Really ?

I would never dream of buying diy body filler like isopon. Ridiculously over priced for the tiny amount you get. I just go to our local Car paint specialist & buy a gallon can of the same stuff for little more.

It’s the gas expansion that has to be accommodated not the resin.
Taken at face value, that suggests a valid reason but I'm struggling to get my head around the vapour from the stuff exerting so much pressure that the tin will explode if it doesn't have a large empty space. Do you have any source you can point to that provides more detail to confirm the theory ?

I'm sure you are right about not enough pressure to explode but is it posible there might be sufficient pressure to push the inserted tray and plastic lit off? They are not held tight by screw top. As far as I can remember its the same arrangement in lots of brands polyester fillers. I have never bought a very large tin, mentioned above, as with time the resin sets without the catalyst and I don't use enough. Though from memory even the large tins have a reasonable expansion gap, though certainly not half the tin.
