I'm trying to drill holes in spalted beech, which can be a bit punky. Is it worth trying wood hardener, or is it just a botch up?

Hello,

Highly diluted shellac or thin cyano-acrylate are very good wood hardeners, and you almost surely have got one or the other at hand.

Have a nice day,
