I've had an email giving me the IP address of someone who has made at least 5 attempts to get into my account for another forum I'm a member of, is there anyway I can find out who this person is, and how do I find out my IP address. I know very little about computers and the Internet.

This depends on how you connect to the internet. You could try using this site http://www.whatsmyip.org/ or you could take a look in your modem/router On the admin page it'll tell you somewhere. Your modem/router will have two IP addresses, one public facing (WAN) and an internal (LAN side) one. The LAN one will be someting like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x and all the machines on the LAN will have an IP in the same range for example your modem/router might be 192.169.1.1 and your PC might be 192.168.1.100 . External, public IPs will never be 192.168.x.x nor 10.x.x.x because these are reserved for private networks.

The map and location on it are of course approximate.

The Admin of the forum can probably ban an IP, but that is only effective if it is static, of course.

I think approximate is stretching it a bit. It depends on how a user is connecting to the internet. For me it's over 200 miles out.

Well, the address it is using will be the registered address of the owner of the domain name, so the ISP of a domestic user. More useful perhaps is the field "abuse-mailbox" which gives you an e-mail afddress to complain to.

I contacted one of the moderators and they've blocked that IP, I didn't know they could do,that so thanks Tony.

Unless that was a static IP bought and paid for by a particular individual or company then blocking it is not a good idea and will not stop the rogue contacts and indeed could penalise genuine users.

Most folks log in with a dynamic IP which can vary every time they connect to the internet or maybe every time they reset their router.

Blocking such an IP means that the next time someone up the road who is also a forum member gets allocated that same IP and happens to try and access the forum, they will not be able to access the forum.

For instance, you have never logged into UKW with the SKY IP used for the above post before.
But you have signed in on well over 150 other IP's with posts numbering between 1 and 129 posts per IP.

My knowledge of the Internet is at best poor, I did think though that your IP address is like your postal address.
The link Tony gave me to give me their location shows them in Beijing! The forum is for landlords in England so I very much doubt it will effect other users up the road.
