IKEA Sanding Hood

Robo Hippy on the US forums built a sanding hood using a 25 gallon food container - a white plastic cylinder with the side cut out and dust extraction added. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZsVc7qVx7A

The design appealed to me but I was short of a food container but I do have IKEA just down the road - I like IKEA it is full of good kit that can be used for uses other than they intended. Cost £5.50 plus wood scraps

On a sample of one - the bowl on the lathe I think it does work.
Robo Hippy proved the principle in his YouTube video he did the nose blow test after a days sanding.

The opening is largely covered by my body, but I could blank it off on the ends if necessary

Here is a link to the one I made. The idea is that the more enclosed the piece you are sanding is, the more dust you get before it gets into the air, even with power sanding. Eventually I will make one that sits down on the lathe body so it can stay up when I am turning, rather than taking it off and on just for sanding.

I looked at that - but felt it was a step too far; the problem was accommodating the tool rest and the tail stock. The base and side of the box needs to be removable to accommodate them which leads to an unstable box when they are removed for turning; alternatively build a very large box that goes beneath the ways and includes the full bed length, and blank off part of the front opening while sanding.

I used a drill on that bowl, with no problem. And you can angle the drill a little if you need to.
If it was a vase it maybe a different story when sanding the inside - but you can't have everything.
