Identify this wood?

Looks veneered to me and from the photo Brazilian Cedar but could be anything faintly mahogany looking. Go easy with your sander! If it is Brazilian Cedar you will taste it for hours even if wearing a dust mask.

I wondered if it was veneered, mainly because you can't see grain at the sides (it is painted) and because it is so perfect.

You are probably right, it was just the underside that threw me, why veneer that? But I guess double veneered board is common.

I will attack the underside to find out.
 
In order to stop the substrate bowing veneers and laminates have to have a "balancing" veneer or laminate on the opposite side.
The edge banding on the table points to a veneered construction.
