I hope this works! I've had this pillar drill for some time, it's always been the way you see, but now I need to learn how to change the speed of rotation, before I burn out a Forstner bit or two. I'm sure for some of you this is as easy as falling off a log, but I'm totally unable to see what to do. It's rotating too fast, and I need to slow it right down. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You currently have your drill set to give the highest speed. So ....

Release tension mechanism.
Take off both belts.
Replace left hand (spindle) belt on the bottom (largest) pulley of the stack and to the corresponding pulley on the centre pulley stack.
Replace right hand (motor) belt on the top (smallest) pulley of the stack and to the corresponding pulley on the centre pulley stack.

This will give you the drill's lowest speed.

Once you get the hang of this I'm sure you can work out what to do for all the intermediate speeds.

Well to start you loosen the thumb screw just behind the chrome lever on the side and pull the chrome lever back towards the front of the press
this loosens the belts
then adjust the belts to the speed you desire as the label
then retension the belts with the chrome lever and lock up

Ian

For example

With the belt from motor to centre pulley @ "A" position
Belt from the centre pulley to chuck spindle pulley @ position no 2 ----Will give a speed of 520
Belt from the centre pulley to chuck spindle pulley @ position no 3 --- Will give a speed of 390
Belt from the centre pulley to chuck spindle pulley @ position no 4 --- Will give a speed of 270
Belt from the centre pulley to chuck spindle pulley @ position no 5 --- Will give a speed of 180

The 50hz & 60hz figures only show the speed variation depending on the possible power supply variation

Hope I have not confused myself #-o

Thanks, guys. I just couldn't get my head around that, it looked so complicated! I'll have a go in the morning!
