Bog& I am impressed that you managed to get the outside of the bowl done with a scew! It's a lovely tool to use but definately not the most user friendly to start with :!:

I have always wondered how you sharpened ring tools and what they are for? For £1 that has got to be a bargain!

I have now set up my 'new toy' and whilst I was about it changed the mains lead on my very old, heavy and good B&D bench grinder and put a second white wheel on it. I do believe that I will like the jig too and at that price I had better like it!

Yesterday i spent practicing with the chisels as advised. Tried to turn
a piece of spalted wood..it was like turning a piece of balsa wood...lol
no matter how sharp my chisel I got bits of wood chipping out &
they kept catching..still got something out of it..




Then I had a go at this chunk..Was a fair sized log, managed to get it
centered and started to give it some form, again quit pleased with the
end result have wrapped it in newspaper and stuck it in the bacement
to dry out slowly
Have no trouble giving the mushroom/toadstools away..friends
seem to like them for their gardens and plant pots,,lol



To day I started turning large logs and concentrated on getting them
centered & diameter the same from one end to the other.
Did around 5 all wrapped up in paper to dry out slowly.
Still eager to just get on...No sine of the book I ordered last week.
Got Wood-turning A foundation Course & few others...

Has anyone got jaws for this chuck they want to part with...for
pie & mash of course..

Glad I turned the log blanks now going to need them by the look of the book.

HB the ring tool gives a very good finish, but you said it took bits out. Well the tip is to have the part of the ring that is doing the cutting below the centre line of the wood. As well I bore out with a large fostner bit first (35 mm) dia then use the ring tool. Take your time it does work well.

My wax 22 from Richard has just arrived. Now that is fast delivery
and service...Thanks for the advice on the wax finishes guys
will give it a a try later on today...:lol:
Also got some small ebony pen blanks...But no small pen lathe to turn
them on..Tried my pen mandrel on my Nutool lathe but getting the centers
right is a bit of a bind & I feel it might just bend the mandrel out of shape,
so I"m better off waiting..

Thanks for the hint Brendan...I am just reading about sanding sealers, types
& safety for goblets or toys.

When I put this wax on I apply it with the lathe stopped then hand buff the work to spread the wax evenly then turn the lathe on for the final buffing. I find it works better this way and helps avoid ring marks.

Tried the method today it works better than it spinning..thanks.
Had a go at a xmas tree and an organic looking mushroom...Well
the cap exploded so I just modified it to look as if it was a design
decision... :lol:

The tree not bad but is bit rough Think the chisel was not sharp enough



The Large Mushroom all was going well untill I tried to hollow out deep
under the cap I wanted to make it as thin as poss and as deep as poss
but as usual I was probably using the wrong chisels again ended up
with a small blood-blister... :lol:


As you can just about see the chisel kept catching and digging in
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrg...What chisel do you use to get a deep hollow folks


Still not a total loss...it is all practice.

For the inside of mushrooms I use a thin parting tool this allows you to get right in and after a bit of practise without catches.
