Hinge position

I'm in the process of making a jewellrey box, I am thinking of having the lid 1" bigger than the box giving me an overhang of 1/2", is there a fool proof way of positioning the hinges? I will be using 1" brass butt hinges.

Story pole. Clamp the lid in the open position to the rear of the box. Set up and mark one hinge on the box/story pole and then transfer marks to the other side.
