Hi I am sure it's been asked before

What's a high quality primer for redwood pine?

I am about to make a TV cabinet and the pine will all be painted,

I've not used primer before so would like some opinions and what your experiences are with different makes,

should it be water or oil based?

Some people consider this a heresy but you can safely do without the primer in some cases. However, if you want to 'do it right' then it's supposed to be primer, undercoat, and finally paint (2-4 coats).

What paint are you planning on using? Makes all the difference.

Water based primers tend to raise the grain, if you want something to look flat use oil based, if you don't mind seeing the grain water based is generally quicker and easier to use.

Pre-raise the grain and knock back? Or knock back after the first coat of primer?

You don't have to accept any unwanted texture just because you're using a water-bourne finish on your wood.
