Hi Baldhead I have had a look at the Hegner,The small knurled screw that hold the top clamp is missing, also the top clamp is also missing.I can only assume that a pinned blade is being used in the machine. You would need to buy the knurled screw and Hegner blade clamps in my opinion for it to be like ours. That is my view of what I can see of the photo shown.Have seen all the photos on view other than what I have said it does seem to be in a good condition.

Looking at the bits that are missing, allow about 25 quid for new parts, plus another £16 for the quick clamp which I reckon Hegner's should be supplied with. It's not variable speed, which should keep the price down. Even though it says excellent condition I'd contact the seller and get assurance it's in good working order with none of the really expensive stuff missing.

Martin.

the seller looks like a bit of a hoarder. I wouldnt be surprised if he still has the parts on a shelf but didnt think to take a picture. Might be worth asking.

I have emailed the seller who informs me, 'he is not clear how it has worked so well for the years it has been used', he also said, 'what you see in the pictures is what you get'. I am very wary about buying from eBay, even more so when the seller says cash only (as is the case here), he doesn't actually say he's had the saw for years, and looking at the other stuff he has for sale I wondering if this is part of job lot from a school?

This is for my brother who is disabled, I convinced his wife to buy a new saw but thought I could save them a few quid. I'm not sure about this so I think on this occasion I'll give it a miss, something just doesn't ring true.

Thanks for the help.

you do right to give it a miss , it could be ok but then again....go with your gut feeling I know one person on the forum who got there fingers burnt with a hegner on here a part broke , he got it fixed think it was a bearing or something , plus if that pinned blade has been used like that it could have damaged the arms they are not designed to be used with pinned blades.

if it was me I wouldn't buy it but that's me I not a big risk taker with second hand machinery.

there is some gems to be had on E bay and I know some guys on here have got some good hegners on there but there can be some rotten apples.

if it had come from a school I doubt it would have been used that way with the pinned blade it would have had the clamps on

I don't wish to encourage or discourage you to buy but in fairness the seller looks OK to me, they have been on ebay since 2005 and have no bad feedback, most sellers who sell an item that has to be collected insist on cash for security reasons I don't think it means they are going to cheat you.

I have been buying and selling on ebay since 2002 and to date have not had any bad experiences at all. The scams are usually on hi-tech items such as phones and tablets and sellers from another country. Looking at this sellers offerings it does look like he is clearing his garage out as he states, if someone is going to scam you they are not going to bother doing so with a second hand scroll saw as it has limited interest to most buyers.

What you need to do if you want it is set your maximum price in advance in your head and then bid at the last moment, don't go above that amount or enter a bidding war. obviously if the price goes up a lot it may be wise to wait for another one but at the moment £52 is a low price for what it is considering what you are getting.

The seller states that it is in excellent condition and if you bought it and it was not as they describe then you could just say sorry it's not as advertised and you are not buying, you could ask them to plug it in to make sure the motor works as if that was faulty it would be expensive to replace.

Quite a few buyers are bidding for it so it may go for a silly price OTOH someone may get a bargain!

Please don't be put of of buying on ebay, yes there are some bad sellers but the majority are genuine people who are very fair decent and honest. :)

Scrimper I too have used eBay since 2002 for both buying and selling, unfortunately I have had bad experiences as a buyer and a seller, I am therefore wary if things don't add up.

I can't accept that an owner of a Hegner would only use pinned blades incorrectly installed in the saw.

I also asked the seller if he had a buy it now price in mind, he told me if I went that night with £180 the saw would be mine, but I had to hurry as another chap was going on Thursday night to buy it, now Thursdays been and gone and the saw is still on eBay, so either the chap went on Thursday and didn't buy it because of the missing parts (or some other reason) or perhaps there was no other chap and the seller was trying to push me into a quick sale.

I also asked to buy the bench sander he has up for auction, he wanted £120 for it, I asked him what direction the disc turned, he couldn't answer that (even though the guard gives you a clue).

You are correct about his feedback being all positive, but since he joined eBay in 2005 he has only sold 4 items, it's very difficult to get negative feedback just buying.

I know you weren't aware of the above facts but I'm going with my gut reaction and I won't be bidding.

OK I was just trying to help. :)
I know you were trying the help, and I'm grateful for you input, I wasn't having a go at you, but I wanted you to know the other reasons why I think things didnt quite add up, I only hope I am wrong because I don't want another ebayer to get ripped off.

Now when I read the description of an item I look at the things the seller hasn't said, ie I bought a Stanley No 6 plane, the description said, 'I am having a garage clear out. This auction is for a Stanley plane No 6 18". It then went on about delivery instructions, and saying the plane is the one in the picture etc. etc. there was no mention of condition, age if they owned it from new etc.
