Hi, I am getting fed up with wearing safety glasses on top of normal glasses. If I am only going to cut for a short period I use a paper face mask along with my vacuum cleaner dust extractor instead of the respiratory face mask which is a pain to put on. Any when I am using the paper mask my safety glasses steam up which is a pain in the but. I would like to ditch the safety glasses and hope my normal glasses would be okay.
However, eyes are important so I wondered what other visually challenged scroll drawers do.

I must admit to not using saftey spec's at all. I use a magnifying headband, or whatever it's called. One of these. I keep 4 rechargable AAA batteries on the go. The LED lamp isn't very bright, much like myself  , but it helps a little with some of the shadows in my garage

Thanks Martin, I have not seen them before. They look as if they could be useful for some of my other craft projects. I might even be able to burn some straight lines when using my pyrography iron.

I'm an engineer by trade and travel to a lot of company's where I have to wear full ppe whilst working in most areas of there site. So the company I work for agreed to get me prescription safety glasses, I mentioned this to my optician and he supplied a pair for £50 the best money I've spent in the workshop. I put them on when I switch the on lights, and lets face it with eyes you just get the one set!

Martin that's the one I put up on here a while ago did you get it after I posted :D wondered what you think to it ?

I like mine its spot on for scrolling and much easier than having a magnifying lamp on a stand in the way and dosent steam up like my glasses when wearing a mask I saw Heston bloomy thingy with one on when he was making some intricate food on the telly , he must have seen my post

Hi Mark, yes, I believe it was your post that prompted me to buy one. In fact I bought two to save needing to go to the garage when I need one in the house.

Martin.

Maybe a stupid question, have only used one once briefly. Why do you need safety glasses for a scroll saw?

It's suppose it's possible for a piece of the blade to fly off into your eye when a blade breaks, though I haven't heard of it happening, or you might get some sawdust in your eye. :)

Martin.

In 25 years I have never worn safety glasses for scroll sawing. The highest a piece of sawdust flies up from the blade is about 4 inches. I have never had a piece of blade break and fly up either and I mast have used thousands of blades in that time. I do however wear my ordinery glasses when I am on the saw.

I am so glad that I am not the only one who thought this! If I had to wear all this safely stuff when doing scrollsawing I would give up!

I spend a lot of time in my workshop and do wear ear defenders and safety glasses when using my thicknesser, table and radial arm saws etc, I have my home made dust extraction set up on such machines but one of the pleasures of using the scroll saw is that I feel safe to use it without all the safety specs, ear muffs and noisy dust extractors. yes of course there is a slim chance of a piece of wood flying up but IMHO it's unlikely with a scroll saw.

On the rare occasions when I have kitted myself up with googles, ear defenders and mask to do something I find that my glasses steam up so quickly that I am more likely to have an accident because I can't see properly!

I have been doing fretwork since I was a young boy and that is a very long time ago and never felt the need to protect myself so much as some on here, I will probably be chastised for saying so but I just think all this safety stuff is unnecessary when using a scroll saw.

everybody has a choice on how they use their scroll saw as its their eyes and lungs

I not too concerned about safety glasses I use my visor as it gives me a nice general magnification and protection not sure what the lense safety is but I cant imagine them being made from anything that's going to shatter and embed in my eye

I wear a p3 dust mask and I have my record dust extractor on , I could never go back to just blowing the dust around and having a nose full of crusty saw dust and some in my lungs but that is my way of doing things

I find the p3 mask comfortable to wear and the visor too as with it being a flip down plenty of air circulates around the lense so no steaming up the lights not bright but does illuminate the cut line I like it also as you can just flip the lenses up when doing something else

but its your lungs and your eyes so not really concerned as to how anyone else does it

I have never used safety glasses when using the scroll saw, I just have a less expensive pair of prescription glasses, I do however use a clear visor (similar fit on head as a welding mask), when using my mitre saw, router or rotary/belt sander.
Dust extraction by an induction motor driven unit, with large collection bag and double filter bag, with a manifold distribution set up, serving all of my dust generating equipment, plus an overhead (Jet) general workshop filtration unit.

But as Mark said its your eyes and lungs, so it must be your decision.

Tip, if making a manifold system, 4”(100mm) soil pipe and fittings from a builders merchant, is much less expensive than dedicated dust extraction pipe.

Take care.

Fair enough but I am always interested in the way others do things so I posted my way in case anyone might have been interested, sorry if I upset you. :)
