I sold most of my planes a while back and didn't replace many, but here's what I've currently got and use:
1. 102 Block
2. No.4 Smoother
3. Cabinet Scraper

My modest little group of favourite planes includes
1x wooden jointer
1x wooden jack with hefty scrub blade
2x wooden jacks 1 set generally med cut the other finer
1x brass soled very tactile 1" skew rebate
various other width rebate planes
1x wood plough plane
1x wood spokey
1x metal round spokey
1x wooden smoother
one or two nice moulding planes
1x scooping plane home made
various store bought and home made scrapers
also
1x metal smoother 1x metal jack 1x metal block-unsure of the corrct numbers the jack is 2" blade the smoother 2 3/8"?? (I am not a statistic sort of person :roll: )
These metals arent used so much although I recently replaced the blades with laminated ones. Only my wooden smoother has blade depth adjusternemt the rest plain wedges :wink:

Then there are about 30+ planes that just followed me home, but which don't see that much use (and which I'm trying to sell one day). Awaiting restoration (or inspiration ), about ten-fifteen planes and a pile of parts.

It seems that my favorites are on the shorter side, but then again I'm more just an ordinary chippie and not a joiner or cabinetmaker.
There seems to be a cultural difference on the planes as well. Although Finland is full of old wooden jointers, there has been a surprisingly small amount of longer metal planes over here. The standard plane is a #4 and anything longer than a #5 is scarcer than hen's teeth.
This was fun. How about the same thing on saws or chisels?

I replaced Record/Stanley bench plane cap irons with Clifton 2 part irons.
Never really got on well with combination/plough plane, but it still gets used occasionally.

I must inhabit a parallel universe!
I make furniture for a living - full time - and I only EVER use one plane; a block plane for trimming up the fit on doors and drawers or for knocking off the edge of a panel. That's it.
Everything else is done on machines.

and another old grubby block (of ebay for 99p) ......... all need tuning and new better blades (except the #102 (LN)) ........... they are all on the list once I've got a few more DIY jobs and some cabinets for my shed finished so hopefully in the new year ....

Low angle block, no 5, (no 4, no 3 not used) and I've just added a shoulder plane, so thats it. would like a jointer of some sort, but thats later.
