A few days ago I asked for advice about what to do with this:

Thanks to the helpful replies, I decided on a course of chainsaw/bandsaw action and today managed to produce this:

This is my first ever attempt at turning with a waney lump and I learnt a lot. The wood, which I think is spalted elder (but any other suggestions welcome!), was quite punky in the centre so I opted for some bark inclusion instead of attempting to deal with the spongy middle. Liberal application of CA glue at various stages held it all in place nicely.
I'm quite amazed at the glorious variety and figuring there was inside.

12.5cm diameter, finished with sealer and woodwax. The rather over-large recess is because I only have 73mm jaws on the old Record chuck. I would have liked it smaller, but that'll have to wait until funds permit purchase of a new one.

I also managed to produce this little specimen from a less stressful piece of sweet chestnut:

11cm, finished with sealer and woodwax.

Cherry log is next in line for attention.
