Reading the last two posts with the list of exotic cars, (Drool!) I can't help but wonder what makes us buy a certain vehicle.
I saw a lady on TV once who stated she didn't care as long as it was Red!
Now-a-days my choice is dictated by pure practicality, ie, what's available at the breakers!
We have Fiat and Honda dealerships locally, we also lack Public transport. What we do have is a large number of drivers that the local police would prefer to see cease driving!
The result? Lots of of Fiat and Honda cars at the breakers!

I bought the first Jag 'cos it just looked the business, and my son works for Jag so could get parts at trade prices!! -

I got the BMW because my other son had a 3 series at the time and I was impressed with that, and you seem to get a lot of toys for the money.

To add my two penniworth, my car history is:-

Ford Anglia (first ever car, 1965 model)
Ford Escort Estate 1.3 (good spacious estate)
Ford Cortina 2.0 GT (loads of grunt but poor build quality)
MGB roadster (great fun, last car before first kiddie came along!!)
Ford Capri 3000E (powerful, too powerful at times)
Mini Countryman (had it for years, good little workhorse)
Rover 2600S (awful)
Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia (good little car)
Peugeot 406 (not very good at anything really)
Ford Sierra 1.6 (good reps car, not comfortable for long journeys)
Rover 620s (poor build quality)
Audi A6 1.9 TDi Avant (great load carrier and 50 mpg)
BMW X5 3.0 TD sport (cracking car, hideously expensive to service)
Peugeot 206 (65 mpg says it all)
Audi TT (very quick, a true drivers car)
Audi A6 2.0 TDiE Avant (superb car, well equipped, well built, excellent economy)
Landrover Defender (basic, but good on the farm)
Isuzu Rodeo pickup (bl**dy awful)
Landrover Discovery TD5 ES Premium (good, my current car)

I have also worked abroad in remote areas and driven lots of Landrovers, Toyota Landcruisers, Isuzu Troopers, Nissan Patrols etc etc as company vehicles. The Landrover 109 was by far the best at off-road work. Landcruiser was so powerful the propshafts would twist like a stick of liquorice if a stone got jammed behind a wheel!!
SWMBO has also had Nissan Micras, Fiat Cinqucentos, Volvo 240 Estates (best load carrying car of them all).

When I first started driving, petrol was 4 shillings and 10 pence a gallon. Used to fill up with 4 galls and let the attendant keep the change from a pound! No self service then.
Journey from Leeds to St. Ives took 17 hrs and you never went anywhere
without a good set of tools, spare parts and a petrol can.

Like I said earlier Rod, they don't make 'em like they used to! The day I met my future Father-in-Law
the starter motor dropped off the engine. My wife and I left our wedding reception in the back of an A35 van!

What did you think of the Fiat Coupe Roger? I had the 20VT and loved it, most reliable car I've owned, well put together, stylish and very quick. Just no good for lugging timber

Fab car...Mine was a 20v as well. Just wish I remembered to keep checking the oil level. That engine rebuild cost me £3.5k.

My A35 was about 18 months old when bought in 1961. It had semaphore signals which occasionally stuck and required a thump to the van's side to loosen them. I don't think it had any windscreen washers as I vaguely remember buying a kit which you pumped to squirt out the fluid?
The heater was a very basic re-circlulatory type.
Not much power too - even had to resort going up very steep hills in reverse on occasions when touring the Dales!
Had it for about 4 years whilst at University and survived some very bad Winters - those were the days?

I've been fortunate to choose all my cars and so none of them are turkeys :wink:

I'd be interested in knowing if there is much overlap in cars that we've owned. So here's my list - in no particular order

Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce (wrote that one off)
Corrado - one with the supercharger
Mazda RX8

I'm sure there's one or two that I've missed.

We have a few overlaps - you have great taste!

Mazda RX-8

The 307 was my first and hopefully last 'sensible' car. But I've loved every other one and will be gutted when it's time to trade in the RX-8. My cars have always meant a lot to me, and I happen to like going from A to B in a FUN way!

I've also got a Suzuki DL650 V-Strom bike.
