You can pick up the DeWalt 'compact' belt sander for less than £130 - a quick google threw up this one here. Can't remember what I paid for mine a few years back, but it was certainly less than a ton.
It's a nice little machine - solid, great dust extraction so good for scribing - but the belts can be a bit tricky to get hold of as they're small. It's available in the US as a Porter Cable, if you have a 110V trannie...
