A part on my planer/thicknesser gave up the ghost just recently. After some looking around I figured the deformed looking plastic part on the shaft is a tensioning roller for the chain.

This area of the planer generated some serious heat so I took off the cover to have a look and found this. I am not sure if this part failing is what caused the thing to get so hot, or if the heat caused the part to fail.

I am wondering what I could replace this with, original parts are not so easy get anymore and alre also quite expensive from what I've seen. Not sure if making one is possibble, out of something like perhaps plywood, but I am thinking it'll probably wear down quickly. Maybe a bearing of a proper size with rubberized outer surface for the chain to roll against?

Or some other roller perhaps, there are chain tensioning rollers you can buy but I need to figure out which size this is, haven't gotten it off the planer yet. The planer works without this part but I am not sure how good it is to run it without proper tension on the chain (whose purpose is to transfer power to the outfeed roller for the thicknesser)

did you sort this problem out? check the bearings on the cutter rollers - any play either up & down or in & out could mean that the heat is generated there

I've been running without the part entirely, seems to work... heat hasn't been an issue since. I figure I ought to get something on it as I think it's main purpose is to prevent excessive wear on the main shaft from the chain, though it barely touches it. I just haven't had the time or motivation todo something about it.

Have you had any luck sourcing the part? The plastic (nylon) part in my machine is intact and I can send you a drawing with specifications if you require to have one made up.

I am busy rebuilding my machine and am looking for the manual.

Have you got a manual?
