Last part of my build to be decided
I will be using wood runners for my cutlery canteen build
what is the easiest for an amateur?
bottom runners or grooved into drawer sides?
I have false drawer fronts if it makes a difference

Steve

Bottom runners would probably give you a few more options to correct and adjust if everything doesn't work out exactly as planned. It's still not a bodger's charter, but it's a little more accommodating than side runners.

thankyou both

was the last part of my drawing \ build
I have sunk over 100 hours into this project (could have halved that if had new timber to hand,so lesson learnt) faltering on drawer runners I think could be its downfall
so much youtube etc for woodworking are available
I also have a stack of books
but the finer details are scarce to say the least
it does seem that fine cabinet making is a trade that will not get passed down thru generations without furniture schools and\or members of forum that are happy to pass on their knowledge

Have I missed the Cutlery box finish Steve
yes all done and moved on  I LIE BADLY
this was such a bad idea to start with...weekend warriors don't have the time for this sort of work IMHO

I am still working on it, and I will get it done
I think it may be my bad planning, but I seem to have nearly all the components ready and nothing fitted together as they have to be in order
I will make and groove the drawer slips tomorrow
a few bits of brass to cut and polish and then onto glue up

Steve

Grooves in drawer sides is worst possible option - very little bearing area reduced even further by clearance. They wear out very quickly.

drawer slips not sides
I would have preferred the sides so I don't lose too much depth to drawers
but it will be slips

Steve

talking of drawer slips :)
there seems to be 2 options
a) fitted to bottom of drawer side (making drawer side deeper and thicker)
b) fitted flush to bottom inside of drawer side (making drawer side same height but thicker)

is there a right \ wrong way?

Drawer slips...the bit I do not understand

Image00002.jpg

which way up?

Image00003.jpg

the box complete with brass corners (to hide the sliding dovetails, and holds box together)
the front of the box has false drawer at top, then there will 3 drawers below

Image00005.jpg

lid still oversize

Image00006.jpg

drawer box parts
all my beech was spalted, but feels solid and I wasn't going to buy more wood

Image00007.jpg

drawer fronts and drawer slides, I know they are different colour but I am low on suitable pieces ( I may remake them 2 yet)

Image00008.jpg

and Mr Nosey mk11

Image00004.jpg

and the picture I should delete and not show...angry with myself on this mess, its less than 1mm but so visible ( I may make a new corner slightly larger)
yes the screws are chewed up, but they are just half length ones that were reused..I will replace :)

At least you are getting there Steve Lovely pieces of spalted wood
I m getting there slowly
it is however on hold due to lack of knoweldge
I have googled \ read books like crazy
below drawer and I have minimal rub area
inside drawer and i have a ridge

both work in desgn tbh

until I get the eureka moment.maybe time to abandon and work on mk3 Nosey

Steve

Stop over thinking it. Make it. Decide what didnt work so you can change the next one. Move on.

And the only tip I can give to improve the piece... slot head screws should face length ways down the wood, not random like pozidrives.

brass slot head screws face whatever way they want :)
if you bottom out the countersink brass to brass they wont turn anymore

Steve

If you cant get the slot to tighten in the correct place, you back it off untill its inline.

Its a finishing touch that has been forgotten since the cross heads arrived.

I will see happens when I get to that stage. I agree it would look nicer..those screws are scrap ones that are in the pic
I have a nice boxwood handled screwdriver that fits them perfect...when I find the pineapple thing
well I took your forceful advice and got on with it :D
I fitted the drawer runners and the front "rails" if that is correct terminology
I made the runners 1.5mm higher than the rails, not a clue if this is correct way to do this
my thoughts was to stop the drawers bottoms rubbing on the front rails
I will have false fronts so can reduce this height at final fit to 1mm approx
I found an article on here about drawer slips that Custard \ Jacob had commented on so all the mud is now clear
