Hi

I have just aquired a pair of dovetail saws from another board member for the price of returning one sharpened in payment which is very fair.

Looking at the saws they need tooth re cutting

The saws are:
Spear and Jackson No 26 currently 12tpi which I was expecting a 14tpi cut

Zelus 48 this is 14tpi but a bit of a roller coaster so needs re cutting as well. This is a nice saw but the closed handle is a bit small for me.

Could anyone shed any light to the correct spec and history of these saws

Regards

I suggest you should add some pictures, but I can't really see what sort of answers you are hoping to get.

Finding out what the original tpi was could be a long job ... if you like 14 over 12 and the S&J needs re cutting, I should cut it at 14 regardless of what it was originally cut at.

Bonsoir Jackal!

The first question when ordering a saw (or any tool) is: What's the main job of the tool?

For sawing carcass tenons 12tpi is good for me, but 10 tpi would be better.
14 tpi was the standard pitch of S&J in the 1960s, but that doesn't mean alot. 15 tpi is the standard pitch for a dovetail saw, though modern saws (with thinner blades) go to finer pitches.

Salut!
