Dewalt planner/thicknesser 1150

hi folks , been gifted the dewalt 1150 and apart from no easy shaving collector all seems well. My question is the variable speed option i.e. when would you use it ?

When you want a finer finish use the low speed setting, or if you’re getting a bunch of tear out it can also help.

I find it a pain to switch over so I leave it in slow speed the whole time. Only time I swapped to fast was when I was planing hundreds of meters of shed cladding.
