how do u lay out an arc from a board?

imaging a 90% arc 2" wide 1" thick with a radius of 15"

does this need to be fabricated or can u lay the grain in a way that it wont just fall apart

i know it may be a timber waste , but who cares

Steve

What's the finish Steve? If the grain's not going to be seen you could laminate from 2 x 1/2" boards with the grain opposed on each layer to strengthen the weak spots on the opposed boards.

Do you mean timber boards or from sheet material like ply?

Totally off topic but how do you quote multiple posts ?

I normally right click the quote button of the posts I want to quote, open them in a new tab, then select, copy and paste the text I want to quote, then paste them all into just one of the tabs. Much easier than going forwards and backwards in the browser.

They are solid boards

about 1 1\4" x 16" x10'

a different batch to the 27cu :D

I guess I could plane down and laminate 2 together

thankyou

it is part of design of cot bed

I thought it deserved a separated thread as may be of interest to others

it will be a short front thingy to stop child falling out once converted to a bed
so will be the attached to head board and front rail with a couple of spindles in between...if makes sense
I prefer it not to be too chunky or would just go 2 x 2

I can see the thing about making it with bridle joints

but am then concerned that the tenon will only be 8mm thick

is that not another issue?

8mm should be fine. It will be long grain - so will have strength. Also once glued it becomes 18mm? again. Plus it's a hardwood? If you baby breaks that  Then maybe stop giving him/her spinach

By coincidence, Tom Fidgen of The Unplugged Woodshop has just posted on his blog an almost identical problem. He made the 'arc' from three pieces of solid timber, bridle jointed together, so that the grain follows round the finished arc - http://www.theunpluggedwoodshop.com/str ... grain.html - thus avoiding weak short grain.

This is pretty much what I have done with this, which is to be a clock of sorts The rim is made of six pieces, with a short tenon on one end, and a mortice in the other. I should have took a picture of it in pieces I suppose.
