I have been given a very old Burgess bandsaw which has an aluminium type finish.

I can see a model number on it and has probably worn off.

The machine works fine but the blade kept coming off. On taking off the cover I soon realised that the bottom left hand pully was moving sideway slightly causing the blade to run off.

I attempted to tighten it but failed to do so as the thread on the bolt had stripped. It isnt just a simple bolt as it carries a solid part in the middle that goes through the pully and allows it to spin freely.

Can anyone advise where I might buy one of the bolts please or is the only answer to find someone who could make on for me, its such a pity because this old machine is so well made. Thanks

the thread is probably stripped in the hole as well as the bolt, it will most likely need re-tapping. is it grub screw you need, what size/thread, what model 1,2 or 3 Photos would help, where are you if you can get here I'll make one for you

Thank you so much for your reply, I cant see a model number but I can take some pics tomorrow as long as I can see how to attach them to this forum. I have only just joined today and will read through the process this evening. I am 70 years of age and things get a little more difficult to understand..

I am in Derby unfortunately a long way from you but your offer is very generous which I thank you for. I have found a standard bolt that fits and I think the very first part of the hole appears to be stripped the bolt does go in and tightens up fine so I think a new bolt of the right would be ok although it would be better if it was slightly longer than the damaged bolt....

Hi, I'm a bit nearer than Wildman and could make something if you can't find an off the shelf replacement. I quite often have cause to visit Derby.
Regards, Robin

It sounds like the tracking controller that's gone, I had a Burgess but gave it away as I had a few Bandsaws (Could hardly move for them!!  )

I it was a tracking control but I'm a little confused, if the bolt is not fully screwed in wont it come undone or tighten up when the motor starts,,, it just shows we are never too old to learn. I can understand the tracking bit because when I took the bolt out it looks like someone had put a washer in to bring the pully out a little, I left the washer out and the blade came straight off.

The bolt might be a standard part and so readily available.
Compare with standard shoulder bolts. eBay could be a source of small quantities.

I never gave it a thought to look on Ebay but then again I didn't have a clue what it was called, I have had a look and Bingo your dead right. Are they a standard thread if so then I think all I need to do is measure the length and width of the solid part,,,,is that right,,,, thanks again really very helpful, I would like to manage to do it myself, I have had some offers to make me one but I dont like taking advantage of kindness if I can repair things myself, its the knowledge I'm short on, not the will.....

And if you want to bring it up the A38 I'll help you to take a look at it if you want. There is a bolt specialist just round the corner (walking distance) so it should be a straightforward job.
