Hi

I have an American student who has been on a number of my courses. He is returning to the US and wants to take some British tools back with him as his are mostly US and Canadian. I've suggested Clifton, Philly and Nik Westerman to him. Any other suggestions?

Chris

Ray Iles makes some darn good oval handled bolstered mortice chisels and plane irons. Ashley Iles make fine bevel edged chisels and Thomas Flinn Pax tenon saws are pretty good in my opinion.

There are a few British tools working (allegedly) at my previous place of work, would be doing everyone a favour if he took them away

Robert Sorby paring chisels are currently the best available, Crown and Joseph Marples make wooden handled cabinet screwdrivers and many other good 'working' quality tools without expensive and unnecessary embellishments, Richard Kell makes some very useful gauges and (if you use them) sharpening jigs, and Springwood Handsaws are not well known but ought to be.

David Barron makes wooden planes, various tools and gadgets.
Bill Carter planes.
Ray Iles make quite a variety of tools including draw knives.
James Mursell Travishers

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions. Why didn't I think of Ray and Ashley Iles?! Perhaps I should just suggest he ring Matthew at Workshop Heaven for advice.

I've got to say I'm very impressed with my Ashley Iles chisels, the butt chisels are fantastic and not too expensive.
