Picked up a free workmate from a facebook freebie page. It looks to be barely used as the top is spotless and functionally aside from needing new handles it's in great shape. It has however been stored in a damp shed I would say as the paint has bubbled and there is a lot of light surface rust.
Now I didn't pay anything for it and I don't want to spend a load of money on it either as they are not exactly expensive but I would like to stop further deterioration. I have wirebrushed off the loose paint and rust and hoovered it, what can I put on the rusty areas? Are there any straight to rust paints that will work? Treatments like jenolite and vactan seem rather pricey for a job like this.

Put some olive oil in his beer.

Yeah I know, Christmas cracker type joke

Once all the rust is cleaned off treat it with Kurust or similar product and leave it at that if you aren't concerned about appearance otherwise paint over.

If its unlikely to be damp again, I like to simply WD it and just use a rag. I love the aged and "rustic" look, especial if you make new top for it. Let the age, use, and abuse show.

Brass brush and then Hammerite for me if it's going to be used in damp conditions. If not then I'd just brush it and then give it a wipe with an oily rag.
