A colleague has an 'Easyscribe' which is fairly handy, with a dial to set and a pencil that stays parallel to the base... and about £20.

I still tend to use a pencil taped to a few window packers if I need to work one handed.

Mind you, it's cheap compared to this:

Although I guess slightly different ...

Yeah, that (Veritas being Canadian) is quite a specialised tool for log cabin construction
and is not applicable to the task being discussed.

The Veritas catalogue has several tools for working on log cabins.

Actually that (Rutland) one looks quite good!

Bugbear - you have to wonder if Axminster are selling it for that purpose though!

I think they just offer "most" Veritas products.

Oh right. They should say that in the catalogue! A few nutters might buy it by mistake.
I wonder how they managed without it back in the days when they built millions of log cabins. Musta been really difficult if not impossible.

Yep I have one of those & it is quite useful at times, a tad surprised to see they are nearly £27 these days

They will do the job but I imagine half the attraction is that they will look nice nailed up on the wall!

Not half & at least with the two vials you would know they were hanging on the wall perfectly plumb

Being an inquisitive chap, I googled on the topic of scribing log joints. An interesting process, with a long history and regional variations.

An, yeah, fancy scribing tools, some even made by Starrett.

All these people using fancy expensive compasses; a washer from the nut 'n' bolts coffee jar does the job perfectly well. :)

BugBear
... pot washer, the type with a small hole, is what I've used.

I suppose I should make a polished brass one :)

I trim a block of wood a smidgen oversized and use that to guide a pencil. It doesn't require any fancy gadgets and is always accurate.

Compasses and the Trend Easy Scribe only work if they're kept level
