I seem to remember a picture of a machine which thicknessed or planed wood but produced large shavings or ribbons of wood rather than chips as off a normal t.p.

I can't for the life of me hit on the magic words in google - can you help?

wow - that's the one. Looks amazing. I wonder if they're limited in some way in terms of thincknessing or actually squaring the stuff up?

I assume it's just for final surfacing Miles, Not a replacement for a P\T. I'd also imagine it doesn't work so good on all timbers.
 
in effect they are a big inverted skew plane with a power drive. They are designed for final finish and wont square acurately, the timber registers on the table, any innacuracies in square will be taken up in the drive unit above.

Nice bit of kit, but unlikely to figure in my small shop anytime soon!
