Looking at the broken handle, where it sheared, it is much narrower than the piece of M8 thread I extracted from the female boss on the wheel. So I would say that the spindle is M6. The difference in diameter is why I think it failed.

Even the bolt I have screwed in temporary (M8 all the way along) feels much less likely to shear, and that's why I decided to make a handle, with a spindle that is full diameter, in the hope it will withstand any future mishaps..

I chose a coach-bolt, because of the domed head being ready shaped. I should be able to file away the flats too, and I have a couple of chunks of lignum one of which should make a nice handle. :D

So I am obliged for all the advice. It's much appreciated.

As to the lathe, its a Myford A5, I know, I have the serial Number so I am contacting the guy on that site Wildman. Thanks for the link. Maybe he will know something, but it looks very much like the Myford/Drummond, TBH!
