Hi all. I made myself a sign painters kit box a while back from 12mm ply and its been great. I now want to make a slightly larger one and, in order to cut down on weight I am considering 8mm ply. The only thing is that I use the box as a step up, and I weigh around 11 stone. I am constructing using finger joints and wood glue. Do you reckon 8mm would be strong enough?

Standing in the middle of a piece of 8mm ply is likely to end in tears. However if you design it properly with internal dividers as structural elements then they will bear the loads and transfer them to the outside edges and onto the ground.
