    Oak money box

Yes.. pretty much, except I used my table saw to cut most of the waste and chiselled out the rest.

    Trying something new.

I've done something very similar using photoshop to make stencils before. The filter I use (stamp) allows me to alter the light/dark balance and smoothness, making the picture in question less complicated and stand out more. A slight adjustment would make the light areas bigger, making it...

    Oak money box

Good question... i've no idea but i'm sure i'll find out in time. In any case, probably won't be long until its contents are taken to be turned into a couple of notes. :) It's something i'll consider in future though.. thanks.

    Oak money box

Got it in one !! With some cork on the bottom and a varnished edge it plugs well.

    Oak money box

Just an oak money box to put my coppers in. Had some issues with patchy marks on the end grain when oiled so I re-sanded and settled for a varnished finish.

    Patchy finish on end grain.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't own a scraper and my planing skills ( both setting up and using ) aren't there yet. I've been using a belt sander to do most of the work and then worked through a few paper grits by hand to a nice smooth finish.

    Patchy finish on end grain.

I've made an Oak money box which has 2 sides with striking end grain. My problem is getting the finish right. I tried a liberon oil finish but wasn't happy with the colour so I sanded it back down fully and tried a gloss varnish, slightly diluted with white spirit as instructed. The problem is...

    Sourcing Timber

British Hardwoods online in Yorkshire have some really nice oak. Not too local but they do deliver. I was bought a hobby pack of oak which contained some really decent sized offcuts.

Getting broken chuck off a drill body?...

I broke mine a month or so ago and struggled greatly to remove it. My old man got hold of it one weekend and replaced it with a new one. He was convinced that the screw was glued. He used an old school impact driver, a vice and lots of swearing.

Poll , How many people do segmented work ????????

Since starting turning i've only turned a few solid objects, most have been segmented as I struggle to source solid blanks cheaply.

    first chuck

I'm in the market for buying my first chuck. The only problem i have is finding one that is in stock somewhere. I have an Axminster awsl1000 and was recommended to get the K10 chuck with dovetail jaws but they aren't available for a few months. Knowing little about chucks i'm unsure about an...

    Chuck advice please.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Being a total novice i've been getting a bit carried away with getting everything I need in one go. After much thought i decided to spend more on my lathe to start with which and get a larger capacity model, means that i'll have to wait a while to get an...

    Chuck advice please.

I will be buying an AWSL in the next few days and would appreciate advice on which chuck would suit both the lathe and my needs. Being a beginner i'll be trying to turn all manner of objects. Due to the size of the lathe i'll not be turning anything over 250mm wide so will the 80mm K8 be...

    Longboard for little girl

As i pointed out in my first post, I had very little money to put into this ! Baltic birch in thin plies or veneers isn't cheap... then there's the cost of making the press for a one off tiny board. I had a piece of baltic sat there and decided to use it. I knew it wouldn't be as good as a...

    Longboard for little girl

There are a few things i'd like to improve on for my next board. I'd like to improve my varnish finish. Even with sanding between coats I still didn't get it as flat as i'd have liked. I used Johnsons water based clear gloss. The cutouts in the deck where the trucks went through could be much...

Cheers for the comments. She's over the moon with it and rode it to school this morning.

    Longboard for little girl

This is the first longboard i've built. Not my first project but most things i've made so far have been simple screwing like veg beds in my garden and some railway sleeper walls. I'm still very green when it comes to wood working and i own very few tools. thanks though.
