    Making Oak kitchen worktops

dont know where you're getting prices from, but if i have done my calculations correctly, you are looking for about 12linm of worktop. allowing wastage of 50% thats about 3 quarters of a cubic metre. even in england, you shouldn't pay more than 1500 quid for it waney edge. jeff

    Making Oak kitchen worktops

that is a very doable project in my opinion. keep the lengths at 2m and i would consider taking the cut and dimensioned stock to a machinist to face edge and thickness, as the but joint might be a bit tricky on a little planer. not impossible, with decent infeed/outfeed table extensions it...

European help please: 18th Century cabinet hardware question

hi don, as hinging is an option on this design, i would imagine hinge selection would have been at the discression of the user. popular hinges for something like this would have been a piano hinge (posh) or a pair of simple lift off butt hinges, called paumelles here, or even simple flap...

    might buy this

still can't find a decent 2nd hand one. does anyone know what preciscion of concentricity is. apparently this is a major factor in price. as i understand it, could be wrong, it is the play in the spindle. a concencentricity of .01 mm would guarantee the drill hitting its centre within .01mm...

Fixing Oak boards to steel frame.

hi jon, what are you doing to the edge detail? you could make an oak grooved frame to go on top and sides, which would only need to be fixed by a coach bolt at the bottom of each side. the groove being wide enough to take the t&g as well. if there was room i would do all four sides m&t'd, no...

    Soundproofing workshop project...

another thing to remember, different material densities absorb different sound wavelengths. i'm going with cavity fill, medium fibre board like multiplex, osb and fermacell. on a bridged stud construction for the walls. havn't worked out the ceiling yet. jeff

    Should I get an SCMS?

it doesn't have to be a slider, but i use mine all the time too. for ease of set up and it's much easier to cut to a line than on the table saw. if i were to be doing a production run, i would set up the table saw, otherwise, scms everytime. jeff

Couple of questions re: jointing and grooving

hi andy, what tooling do have acces to? a router table perhaps. if so, easy job on there. do all your mouldings from solid and cut the groove at the same time. garb yourself a matched set of profile and counter profile router bits in the style you like and that does all your stile/rail...

    might buy this

thanks for the comprehensive reply eric. i've found this one in france (very expensive) but it does have a nice big table with slots front to back, which will solve the hinge drilling requirements nicely with a fence running on the slots, but as with all the others, still leaves the vertical...

    question on boiled linseed oil.

the mother-in-law popped in this afternoon with a box of stuff i might find useful and i spotted a jar of oil. from the look of the label, circa early eighties. SIGNPOST craftsman range, boiled linseed oil. "restores that new look sheen to old wood" gotta love the sales pitch. on closer...
