    Busy day

I was offered a place in a gallery in Shaftesbury which is a co-operative as opposed to having a commission. Having had a stall there for the past year it works out well worth it as I am renting a space and have full control over what I have in there and how it is displayed. Just spent the day...

    Amphora(e)

A couple of amphora (or is it amphorae?) Both are in old apple. One is on a burr base and has pearls pouring from it, the other is on an unknown wood base and has a crystal block with it. C&C welcome as always. Pete

    Couple of new hollow forms

One might be liked one probably won't be LOL. First one is old apple wood with a rosewood finial. The finial has a gilded lower section that can be seen through the natural slit in the side of the vessel. It is about 27mm tall. Second one is laburnum again with a natural split in the side and is...

Had to pop down to the Dansel Gallery in Abbotsbury to drop off a few more pieces (well worth a visit for all things beautiful in wood) here are three of them. Apple amphora on burr with cultired pearls Apple hollow form with pewter collar and ebony finial Apple hollow form with walnut...

    Hollow forms on the cheap

Did a demo on Wednesday showing how to make hollow forms using tatty wood and no hollowing tools. Just got a great feedback email. Seem to have hit the right note for a lot of those there. Roll on 'Turning on a shoestring' LOL pete

    Bit more stock

Stock building involves not just making new pieces but in some cases renovating ones that have been made for a while. I use a lot of green, damaged wood and so leave for a while to ensure it is stable before putting up for sale. This one was made from a piece of soft, wormy (all gone) elm and...

    More stock building.

Few more pieces done. Good thing about this time of year, not many shows or commissions so have time to refill the stock shelves. Three ebonised oak hollow forms. Some gilding and texturing on them. The smallest is 220mm tall inc. finial, largest is 355mm inc finial. The finials are longer than...

    Break from production work.

Got several pieces on the go, here are two that I have pretty much completed, one ordinary and one more my 'normal' style. This is from a wood that looks, smells (chocolaty) and feels familiar but I can't place it. Got several planks of it anyway what ever it is. The bowl / stand is 180mm dia...

    One off Christmas present.

Last year I made two goblets both held a litre. Mo ear marked one if it didn't sell and planned to stretch out on the sofa with it full of champagne and a long straw. Sadly they both sold first time out so I quietly did another for her this Christmas. This one actually holds two litres so we...

A very happy Christmas or whatever you choose to call it

Just thought I would get started. I hope that everyone has a great Christmas and a really great New year. May Santa fulfill your dreams and your ambitions for 2015 be fulfilled. Pete

    Just wondering....

I initially learned to turn on a graduate in school.Used to go and have a play, unsupervised in my lunch break. There was no variable speed so it stayed on the same speed as changing the belt was a fiddle. My tools were all scrapers made from old files with different shaped ends for different...

    Prototype goblet

This is the prototype for a new series I am doing. Not glued up yet. Wood is oak ebonised with lemon juice on the outside. Inside will be coated for use. Pewter is old mugs melted down and recast before turning to shape and size. C&C welcome as always. Pete

    And it is.............

Not everything I make has holes and bits o rotten wood. Sometimes I get chatting to customers at shows and they come up with an idea for something that I can make. I need a stock of cheaper end things often making up the cost of the show with them. This will sell cheaply and could be a nice...

    In between commissions I...

play around with things. Rephrase that, I diligently work at the more artistic side of things. Whatever. had a piece of root that was too thick so sliced it in half. These are the two halves pinned together with a small laburnum pot on the side. The piece is 9" wide and 10" tall. The pot is a...

    New root piece started.

Haven't posted much lately, don't think tapestry bobbins and stock for Christmas fairs and shows etc are all that interesting LOL. This is a 33" root I have acquired, unknown tree. It has part of the very rotten trunk attached and I have wire brushed out all the gunk and soft wood leaving a...

    Want to turn pewter?

If you fancy having a go check out my post in the for sale section. Pete

Just to prove I make things that aren't full of holes

Got a fixed commission for 200 a year of these tapestry bobbins. Not perhaps the most exciting things to make but a good earner and well worth having. Sent a prototype off and they are happy and confired the order so all I need to do nw is knuckle down and get on with it LOL. Pete

    Not all fun LOL.

Making wonderful artistic pieces is great fun but if you are trying to earn a living you also have to do what people want. I have another 9 pairs of these and another 8 of these All different sizes from 18mm to 33mm diameter. Puts bread on the table LOL so not really complaining. pete
