    Decking Construction

I'm in th process of designing decking. Currently the only web sites that do the design are in the USA. The decking is 22ft long, 10ft wide and 4ft high. The site has suggested 10"x2" joists at 14" centres with the perimeter of two bolted together on 6"x6" posts at 7ft 4" centres. Does this seem...

    Fixing plywood to walls

My daughter wants to line the walls of an alcove in plywood as a feature. It's 6ft wide, 7ft high, 5" deep and its a mixture of blockwork and brickwork. She doesn't want to see any screws or plugs. Any ideas?

    Wing Tipped Countersunk Tek Screws

I'm due to fit bi-fold doors which require the head to be fixed to a steel beam which is 6mm thick. The included screws are "Wing Tipped Countersunk Tek Screws" (see below). I've never used these before so I thought I'd ask for any tips. Do they need a pilot hole, what are the wings for, do I...

    Decking Advice

I'm building this decking for my daughter and I just need to know if I'm on the right track. The decking is 1300mm hight at the front and I propose to put the legs on 600sq slabs. The legs are 100mm square at 1400mm centres. The frames are 150mm x 50mm at 540mm centres.

    USB Wireless Endoscope

I have an issue with the drain by my garage. I've tried putting a hose down but its not solved the problem, slow water release. Anybody bought one of these endoscopes. I've been looking on Amazon and although the reviews show many happy customers the 1star reviews seem really bad. I need one...

    Rutlands Scroll Saw Offer

Rutlands have a "Variable Speed Scroll Saw with FREE Rotary Shaft Package" on offer for £120. I'm in the market for one and wondered if it was a "bargain". It won't be doing a lot of work with thick material, maybe up to 1", and don't want to spend too much.

    Split Turning

I want to create rounded corners on a bed i'm making and it's been a long time since I tackled any split turning. I'm assuming that the old method of gluing newspaper to the wood and then splitting after turning is the preferred method. Is it one sheet of newspaper per joint or two? Do you...

    Price of Oak-faced MDF

I've just phoned around for the prices of Oak-faced MDF. A couple of places were about the same: 13mm @ £56 inc vat 19mm @ £63 inc vat Crown cut A place in Oldbury WM, Arnold Laver quoted: 13mm @ £35 inc vat 19mm @ £41 inc vat Crown cut That seems too good to be true. Are they a good company...

    Chopping Board + Thicknesser

I've recently made a large chopping board (450mm x 600mm) for my daughters partner. It's worked out well including the first-time carving. Because it was so large I had to flatten it with a sled, router and surfacing bit. With the offcuts, plus more wood, I'm making one for Swimbo. As...

    Rememberance Cabinet Construction

I posted this in the design section but only had 1 reply so I've reposted it here to see if it has a better response. About 10 years ago I made a remembrance cabinet for a friend, to be displayed in a church. They recently asked me if I could make a table for it to make it free-standing. 10...

    Remembrance Cabinet Table

About 10 years ago I made a remembrance cabinet for a friend, to be displayed in a church. They recently asked me if I could make a table for it to make it free-standing. 10 designs later they have plumped for this one. I will make all the parts out of 18mm thick oak. The top and plinth are...

    Wood for Condiments

My wife has just shown me something she would like me to make, "what a surprise"!! She has watched tonight's episode of "Mary Berry Cooks". On the table were two blocks of wood, with circular depressions, containing salt and pepper. The question is "which species of wood is suitable". It looked...

    Horizontal Router Table

It it worth making a horizontal router table. Why I ask is I had a accident with my Erbauer 210C router. It dropped off my bench and landed on the handle with the switch, snapping it off the aluminium casing. Now I think its virtually impossible to get spares for these routers, I've tried all...

    Edge Banding Trimmers

I have about 120m of edge banding to trim, is it worth investing in these http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-edge-ban ... rod576751/ http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ed ... rod642260/ or is a sharp chisel better?

    Sheet Material Sizes

I've been laying out the pieces I need for my kitchen cupboards on to an 8'x4' template to see how many I require. I've suddenly realised that an 8'x4' sheet may not be 8'x4' (2440mm x 1220mm) but 2400mm x 1200mm. My question is what is the size?

    BLUM Tandembox Drawers

When I make drawers I usually complete the drawer box and fit the runners to the box and cupboard sides. I use thin packing pieces to position the false front accurately and then glue and screw through the handle holes. This time I'm buying BLUM Tandembox drawer fittings. My question is can I...

    Over Estimating

I need to know how much to over estimate the wood I need for my Oak shaker style kitchen cupboard doors. The frames are all 85mm x 18-20mm which means I can get two out of a 200mm x 25mm sawn board. I've laid them out in sketchup, allowing 13mm between each component, and this amounts to about...
