Record vice 52D Quick release parts missing

Hi Philo, just spent the afternoon repairing a couple of Parkinson 14 quick release vices and now I understand what you were up to when you did this. Beautifully simple and more easily repeatable than the clock type spring set up. I had one broken spring which I brazed back together and...

    STARTRITE 275 TABLE SAW

Why not take the insert out and extend the slot? Provided its clearing everything else underneath the surface that should do it. As said earlier though, the saw probably isn't designed for that size of blade and that may not be helping with the tripping problem. Try it with a ten inch blade if...

    What biscuits should i buy?

I bought a thousand Lamello biscuits from Amazon for £17.50 posted, took a week or so to arrive but only two or three broken ones in the whole pack. I thought that was a deal? Shug

    Dimensions for router table build

It would probably help if you had the feather boards you intend using before cutting slots, just to make sure everything is going to work fine. I've got a cast top Fox router table which is a brilliant bit of kit but with the feather boards I have there's a dead spot where they won't come far...

    Ear Defenders, help me choose

I use Peltor Optime 2 with a neck band, very comfortable, excellent noise suppression and they never move once on. Shug

    Wooden planes - your opinions.

Exactly my thinking. There's an "antique" dealer along the road from us who has dozens of old wooden planes for £3 each so now I have a better idea of what to look for I'll pick up a couple and see what happens. Shug

    Wooden planes - your opinions.

Enjoyed that one Bob, thank you. I'm off to get a hold of an old wooden plane now so I can give it a go. Shug

    Kerosene heater, master xl6 xl9

Probably a couple of litres an hour. Had mine on today and half a tank, about 7 litres, was just about done in just over 3 hours. Shug

    Kerosene heater, master xl6 xl9

I have a Sealey IR20 which is great, quiet compared to normal space heaters and warms a big area up quickly. I use it mostly to heat things up before the big oil heater gets up to speed but it does use a fair drop of fuel. Can't say I've noticed any excess moisture being a problem but the...

Top tips for boxing in some pipes?

I'd just fix two battens to the wall, same depth as the pipes, plasterboard over the face then tape both corners. Decorate the same as the rest of the walls and you'll never know its there. Shug

    Mobile phone screen damage

Put the broken one in the cupboard with all the other stuff that's too good to throw out, then throw it out in a couple of years when you find it again. That's what we do. Shug

    Advice - bendy worktops

That looks really smart but if it's going to be a practical conversion you're losing valuable worktop space by doing that. I've done a couple and every bit of flat surface is useful when you're cooking, cleaning up etc. Or so the staff tell me. It would still look good with a smaller diameter...

Bench top mortiser and pillar drill

To add my tuppence worth, it would need to be a direct drive drill as the necessary leverage applied tends to stall the belt driven ones. I've got a variable speed SIP drill press and I can match the Mortiser speed on it but it won't take anything like the pressure that my Mortiser needs. Sorry...

Ever considered making a repro dining chair? How about 10?

Loads of wee tricks for getting the turned bits to match each other, loved that. I did wonder as well what the bill would have been, nice to see that there's still a market for quality workmanship. Shug

    Toy box

Aye, definitely ply instead of mdf, the first time she tries to lift the lid and jams something between it and the back, it'll split round the screws. Glued and screwed would be strong enough I would have thought but what a grand excuse to buy a biscuit jointer or pocket hole jig. Probably...

    Clarke CHT684 Clamp guide

I bought the Silverline one a few months ago and it looks identical to the Clarke one in the link above. Used it loads for circular saw, router and occasionally on the table saw. It's not the strongest clamping action in the world but it's never moved yet whilst I've been cutting with it. At...

    Breadboard ends advice

I use half and half drain cleaner and water on new pine before waxing, gives it a lovely, instant aged look. Try it on a cutting first and don't be scared of the bright yellow colour, it fades overnight to a pale brown which you can use clear or coloured wax on, depending how dark you want it...
