    Large oval top doorway

I've built a dummy vented window to this, similar dimensions too. What I did was to make radiused corners, and then spliced them into the head and the jamb. The curved templates were all done with a router and trammel, but the template following was done with a ring fence on the spindle. I...

    Some help with terms

Typically deeping would be done when the board you are trying to rip down the middle is bigger than your blade, so you have to cut from both sides.

    40% wastage.

I would say 40% wastage is fairly average, especially from sawn boards. I always charge my material out at 40% waste, but its inevitable I will end up with more. Although the wastage is normally off cuts and not shavings as is your case. So at least I can use the off cuts some time in the...

Early bird or late night owl?

Well most of the time I'm both, very rarely get to bed before 1 am, and usually up before 6 to start all over again

    Does this chisel exist?

a bit wide maybe, but how about a blade from your hand plane? Or for something smaller, a blade from a spoke shave etc

    Mitre/cut off saw recommendations

My suggestion would be a Dewalt 707. Can be had for £220 now, and after an initial setup, its stayed true for more than 3 years, checking weekly. Reasonably capacity of 60 x 270, I use mine mainly for light pelmet, cornice, beading and a whole host of other trim work. For mitres this saw is...

    LN factory tour

Hi Paul, I went on one a couple of years ago, I emailed ahead of when I was going to see hat the arrangements were, they said just to turn up. When we got there, asked the guy in the show room, (an excellent one it is too!) he went off and asked the person in charge and came back with some...

    single phase tenoning

I'm always suprised when I see people in the trade who don't have tenoners. At one time we had 3 here, a Sedgwick, a Multico, and a 4 head Wadkin. We recently sold the Multico though as it wasn't being used all that much. The sedgwick stays set up with one of our morticers for timber subframes...

    Any idea what this is?

What you have there is "far eastern hardwood" either meranti or shorea. Definately not Iroko, or Sapele. I go through hundreds of metres of the stuff in my workshop

Seeking a profile cutter like this..

If its a cutter you need made to match an existing profile, some companies will take a piece of the existing profile and match it exactly to that. When I've had spindle cutters ground before, they have been in the region of £80 or so.

    Door mitre??

I've never come across a router set that will cope with doors apart from kitchen doors. For mitreing the moulding, in the past I have used a similar setup to what Jason describes, but I made it up out of 3 sections and then mitred so I had a guide both sides of the piece I was cutting, nice wide...

How Would You Make This? (Photo Included)

Morning all, I'm just in the middle of pricing up some work for an existing customer, mainly joinery, and also the 4 bar stools as shown here: He wants them made as close to this pic as possible, and wants them to meet up neatly, and look like a panel for the breakfast bar. Usually, I would...

    Honda FCX Clarity

I saw Top Gear too, looks like a great idea. Hopefully with the lack of moving parts the maintainence costs will be reduced too. I wonder how long it will be until we have them here?

    Cherry external door frame?? Update......

I've recently had to remake a curved top window front in Cherry. The shop has about 6 of them, 4 or so are under cover and 2 are subject to the elements. The one I had to replace had a completely rotten cill, and the buildings were built TEN years ago! The window next to it looks okay, but I...

Help please with fibreglass & thermoplastic moulding.

Rather than start a new thread, could anyoen advise me on how fibreglass is bought? I've had a look at the links provided within this thread, and it seems that its bought in kilos, in 300, 450, 600 thicknesses, usually 100cm wide. Can anyoen tell me how long a roll is in these thicknesses? I'm...

Calculating a radius for a tramel bar.

If you're using sketchup, if you select the dimension tool, and click on the arc, it will tell you the radius of the arc  Rather than all of that algebra to confuse your brain. I just drew it out quickly, and it told me the radius was 2231mm, I think thats close enough for woodwork

    Is a router really worth £750 ??

There's a guy on the site who has a pair of them, great bits of kit. Everything is so easy to adjust on them, and the dust extraction is excellent. To secure or remove a cutter, the nut is on a ratchet system, thats a godsend when its easy to replace cutters 10 times or more a day. It's much...
