going to usa for a year wanna bring my hand tools!

Send them by ship!!! Air freight is silly for heavy stuff. If you really want to compare options & get advice, talk to a shipping agent (they deal with air / surface).

    Ashwood chest

Thanks, both of you. A dark heart is quite common in native ash.

    Small Circular Saw Advice

If you buy rubbish then you will get rubbish. In my view, since the purchaser (you in this case) is often innocent, it is unethical to sell such poorly-conceived products. Not worth repairing.

    New workshop insulation??

Vapour barrier inboard of framing & insulation to prevent moisture from the inside air entering wall structure where it will migrate towards the outside & condense in cold outdoor conditions. This can be a sheet of polythene. Lap & tape the joins. Cladding needs venting behind. Use 25mm...

    super accurate bandsaws

Funny, all these years & I never thought of that! I'll give it a whirl when I put the next blade on. But it must be more of a fiddle (slacken all guides, adjust tracking, tighten guides, make test cut, repeat ...) and I hardly use the bandsaw for crosscutting ... For anyone that doesn't...

    super accurate bandsaws

Noise: you need an induction motor, maybe that's a given? The other main source of noise is the guides, so rollers back & sides ..? Linear accuracy is a variable. Narrow bandsaw blades especially often have a biased cut from new, that alters as they wear - thus a rip fence needs to be...

    Ashwood chest

It's circa 450mm high. Lugs of wooden hinges tenoned through the end cleats of the top. Pic 2 is closer to the real colour. Wedged through tenons. Can double as table or seat when closed. Note that the lid is self-parking when open - no stays required. .

    Stuck drain valve

The expression really tight is a bit misleading - I've seen overtightened compression fittings where the olive's nearly cut through the pipe! A sense of proportion's wanted!

    Breaking down timber into lumber

Wide bandsaw say 100mm ... large material can be handled by one person w/o lifting gear - you just lift one end at a time. Wide b/s's often have a roller bed so even w/o a power feed you only have to push & steer the work to get the first straight cut - that then becomes a reference for further...

Wood id help please - some sort of mahogany?

Lovely stuff, old growth forest, exploitation of empire!

    Breaking down timber into lumber

If you can't outsource the ripping of the thicker stuff especially (80mm, 10mm) then you really need either at least a 5hp circular saw-bench (you'd be slogging with anything less) or a wide-ish bandsaw. No a bandsaw shouldn't bind, but when ripping on a circular you keep some wood wedges & a...

    Stuck drain valve

You sharpen twist drill tips differently for brass to get them to bite.
