Probably not a botted gas heater when working, but how do overhead halogen heaters compare to say a normal fan heater for use when working in the garage?

I have two sheds ,one for metal work and one for woodwork,

The wood shed, well insulated, has a electric fan heater that I switch on half an hour approx before I start work. the metal work shed has a halogen heater at the lathe and the same at the bench/vice. although not far apart they only get switched on when using either ( thinking of cost---- don't want to try and heat all the metal----- just me. I was in the metal Dept this a.m. on the lathe for a few mins. and the overhead pointed at me just takes the chill off. A nice rosy red colour just makes me feel warm, however the metal is b----y cold.

Re: dust I try to sand at the end of a session in the wood shed, allowing the dust to settle--- hate masks so even after sanding the dust is airborne for a long time afterwards although when sanding I do wear one. If I remember :(

Think I will have to get some additional Amps into the garage. Just blown the fuse again with only the blower on low and started the bandsaw .....Pop!

Will have to get some estimates to run another lead in from the house fusebox to the garage, about 35ft, say 40'. a seperate fusebox etc, any very rough ideas on cost of this, as I only know a local electrician, who is good, but charges rather a lot. I know I want a 'proper' job, but he was saying about £250-300 ???

As an idea of price. I had about 50' of armoured cable run out to my shed, connection to consumer unit, 6 double sockets and 4 flourescent light fittings wired. I put everything in place they just wired and hooked up to a small board in the shed. I supplied the sockets and light fittings. Total cost was about £280 I think. All done by a couple of qualified sparks and certificate issued.

I would check to see if the Halogen lamps are acceptable to your insurance if I were you, most insurers will only cover fan heaters or oil filled radiators in a wood woorkshop.

Yesterday I put a small oil-filled radiator in my uninsulated single garage. The thermostat's set very low so it doesn't warm the area but it does raise the temperature just enough to stop condensation forming.

I use 4 120w tube heaters in my workshop, normally put these on a couple of hours before I want to work, they raise the background temp by roughly 6 degree's and are also cheap to run.
I think the key here is to have a lot of insulation, my workshop is insulated on the floor, ceiling and walls, so the background temp doesn't normally get below 10 degree's in mid winter

I asked on a couple of different forums what folks recommended for workshop heating and the general consensus was that oil filled radiators are good for background heating. I have a 3 x 5 metre shed with insulated floor and roof and decided to try a small 1.5 Kw unit as a rust preventative low level heater. So far though condensation has not reared its head so I've not had to turn it on. I have used the heater when I've been working in the shed though. At temperatures around 10°C outside the heater works fine once it's been left on for a couple of hours. Once the temp drops below about 5°C though it can't cope. I had planned to use a 3Kw fan heater when I wanted to work in the shed but can't find it at the moment. I'm sure this will do the job though. If I only wanted one heat source I expect a 2.5 to 3Kw oil filled unit would cover most situations for my particular workshop.

Initial plan would be to have an oil filled radiator to keep the chill off, but then turned it up half an hour or so before getting into the workshop/garage. I don't have any condensation problems at all, but oud then have a fan heater when working if necessary or maybe another oil filled one. My daughter has just bought a 3100W one it gives out a superb heat in their cnservatory.

Lidl had an oil filled radiator with a built in fan heater a few weeks back.

Edit: if it's not too late I think they are selling them again starting 29th December.
