Can anyone suggest a UK product " alkyd varnish" or "oil varnish"
David, it was interesting to see ten year old posts of mine at Knots in your link. Alkyd varnish for interior use is still quite common in the US, but I haven't seen it here in the UK for many a year -- all the manufacturers seem to offer is some variation of polyurethane varnish.

Oil varnish just indicates the fact that the varnish has an oil component, specifically either linseed oil or tung oil, and that the solvent for this kind of varnish is white spirits. To know if you are buying oil varnish look on the tin for the cleaning instructions -- if it says use white spirit or brush cleaner to clean the brushes, it's oil based. If it says use water for this, it's a water based finish. Slainte.
