Is there enough interest to dedicate a whole section to the use and identification of different types of timber?

On that subject

I am currently building a large abris for a client from Douglas fir. The client has supplied 9 beams measuring 200 x 80 x 5600.
these however are not Douglas but spruce. They are from a tree that was downed in the 1998 storms and has seasoned in the barn since. The wood is lighter than the douglas but harder.

My question is this.

Is this wood of too greater value to use as purlins in an arbri and is it durable for external use?.

I appreciate that there are many species of spruce and I cannot be exact as to it's latin name.

I am told that it was over eighty years old when it fell.

Should I use this wood for something else?.

Thank you in advance
