Granted, but it's still standard practice to put weeps in - any water that does get in can get out again without having to work its way through the mortar.
 
Must be better to have them than just wish you had them because that part of the chimney is very exposed to the elements and these will assist with heavy driving rain by giving the water an easy exit path.
 
"Hands up" I deleted that post as soon as I realised I was wrong, but it still posted for some reason, it was the position of the weep holes above the very bottom of the return to the tray that I was alluding too, then saw it was a flashing not part of the tray.
