I have this piece on my lathe to turn a new handle for a tiller on a friends narrowboat. I chose it because it looked interesting and I only have this one piece which was originally 80mmx80mm by around a metre long and was used as what I think is called a bearer (the wooden spacer on the back of a wagon to allow forks from a forklift to get under to lift the load which in this instance could quite possibly have been a pallet of the same wood). It is very dense, heavy and has a waxy feel to it.
So does anyone know what it might be?

I went ahead and turned the replacement handle. He wanted it 2" longer than the original (shorter one) which is made of Ash. It turned really nicely and the sawdust when sanding was heavy and waxy like sanding teak. Would still be nice to know what I've made it out of.
