Any electricians among us?

Rare as it is to buy an electrical appliance with a moulded plug attached, recently I had cause to replace a damaged plug and noticed the wires had what looks like a brass ferrule crimped over the end, offering a neat solution and making it easier to screw down. I would like some of these and wondered if anyone knows what they are called and where I can source some from?

I think what you are after are "bootlace ferrules"

I used bootlace ferrules when I rebuilt my CNC machine's controller - much neater and no problems since. The automotive industry uses loads of them but they're useful in lots of places, just pick the right size for the conductors.

That looks neat!

Out of curiosity, who's your source for Hellermann sleeves? I have some old stock but need to get some fresh ones (so old they're perishing!). Never mind neat wiring, they're nowadays dead handy for strain-relieving Apple and Android power supply cables!

Also, is that a Maplins case? I think I recognise it!

Ta - the original K2 box was a nightmare; all the same colour, all on proprietary connectors, about 1/10th the heatsinking needed, undergauge wire... no wonder it caught fire. It's not a Maplin case, it's from an Italian DIY hifi place - can't remember the name offhand. All laid out (as much as possible) to be serviceable and using easily replaced components from Rapid, CPC, RS, Maplin and so on.

The Hellermans came from my employer at the time; I think we got them from RS in bulk.

You shouldn't solder anything that'll go into a compression fitting.

This may be a stupid question but Why?

I was taught (wrongly or rightly) that it was to be avoided because the stiffer soldered end creates a brittleness which can lead to failure, also the clamping screw doesn't hold as well. That said, I've seen tinned ends in commercially made-up mains plugs.

Right. I thought I knew and it looks like I did. It's application specific though does apply here. The solder creates two issues in high power (such as mains) wiring. Firstly it tends to increase the resistance of these connections, and secondly it reduces the flexibility. Both bad things on power connections.
