Why are modern electric kettles all such junk?

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions on kettles. I can't afford a really expensive one and as I'm reluctant to pay even £20 for some junk that won't last more than a couple of years (and the "buy cheap and replace when it breaks" methodology is hardly sustainable as I bet they can't be recycled) I'm going for the "find one on Freecycle for free" option - and have already found one and arranged to pick it up :) Now on the look out for a working vintage one like my really old one that lasted 20 years :) (fingers crossed)

Argos Value kettle £4.99.
So far it's outlasted several more expensive models - now approx 2 years old.
Will certainly get another after this one goes to kettle heaven.

Whenever I'm faced with such a question I always ask myself what Ray Mears would do.Two sticks, a few twigs, empty bean can. Job done.

If your empty bean can has a high ferrous content on the base, just stick that on the induction hob.
